Cologne vs Perfume: What's the Difference?

If you've ever stood at a fragrance counter wondering whether cologne and perfume are the same thing, you're not alone. It's one of the most searched fragrance questions in Australia. The short answer is that they're not the same, but the difference isn't about gender.

The difference between cologne and perfume is concentration: how much fragrance oil is in the bottle. Perfume (Eau de Parfum) contains around 15–20% fragrance oil and lasts much longer on the skin. Eau de Cologne contains only around 2–4% and usually fades within a couple of hours.

Fragrance concentrations explained

Every fragrance is a blend of aromatic oils, alcohol and a little water. The more oil in the blend, the stronger and longer-lasting the scent.

Type Fragrance oil Typical wear time
Parfum / Extrait de Parfum 20–30% 8+ hours
Eau de Parfum (EDP) 15–20% 6–8 hours
Eau de Toilette (EDT) 5–15% 3–5 hours
Eau de Cologne (EDC) 2–4% Around 2 hours
Eau Fraîche 1–3% Under 2 hours

Wear time depends on your skin, the weather and the fragrance notes, but the pattern holds: higher concentration means a richer scent that lasts longer.

So why do people call men's fragrance "cologne"?

In everyday conversation, especially in Australia and the US, "cologne" has become shorthand for any men's fragrance, and "perfume" for women's. That's a marketing habit, not a technical definition. Many fragrances sold to men as "cologne" are actually Eau de Toilette or Eau de Parfum.

So when someone asks for "a nice cologne for my husband", what they usually mean is a quality men's fragrance. And they'll almost always get more value from an Eau de Parfum.

Eau de Cologne vs Eau de Parfum: which should you choose?

Choose Eau de Cologne if you want a light splash of freshness after a shower or at the gym, and don't mind reapplying through the day.

Choose Eau de Parfum if you want one application in the morning to carry you through work, church or an evening out. EDP also develops more depth as it wears, moving from its bright top notes to a warm, lingering base.

For gifts, Eau de Parfum is usually the better choice. It feels more luxurious, lasts longer, and a single bottle goes further.

Why every BOTL fragrance is an Eau de Parfum

At BOTL, we blend all of our fragrances as full-concentration Eau de Parfum, composed to last from morning to night. Our men's fragrances are often described as "cologne" because that's the word people search for, but in the bottle they're true EDPs.

For men:

  • Aroma Dei Christian Men's Cologne – Eau de Parfum 100ml. The scent opens with radiant bergamot, grapefruit and jasmine orchid. As the fragrance develops, the heart reveals amber, cedar and musk. • The Chosen Christian Men's Cologne – Eau de Parfum 100ml. The scent opens with luminous white florals, green mandarin and panna cotta. At the heart, rum, candied lemon and silk musk. It settles into an enduring base of apricot, tonka bean and neroli, leaving a soft yet unforgettable trail that lingers with elegance. Inspired by Deuteronomy 14:2.

For women:

Each fragrance begins with a passage of Scripture and comes in gift-ready packaging. Browse the men's collection or the women's collection.

How to make any fragrance last longer

  • Apply to moisturised skin. Fragrance clings better to hydrated skin, so apply after an unscented moisturiser.
  • Spray on pulse points. Try the wrists, the neck and behind the ears, where warmth helps the scent project.
  • Don't rub your wrists together. Rubbing breaks down the notes faster. Instead, dab your wrists lightly together to spread the fragrance without damaging the scent.
  • Store it well. Keep bottles away from heat and sunlight, which matters in an Australian summer. Avoid the bathroom and the car.

Frequently asked questions

Is cologne the same as perfume?

No. Cologne (Eau de Cologne) has a much lower concentration of fragrance oil, around 2–4%, than perfume (Eau de Parfum, around 15–20%). As a result, it's lighter and fades faster.

Can women wear cologne and men wear perfume?

Absolutely. Concentration has nothing to do with gender. Wear whatever scent you love.

Is Eau de Parfum stronger than Eau de Toilette?

Yes. EDP contains more fragrance oil than EDT, so it's richer and longer-lasting.
